During a residency that took place 150 meters above the largest machine built by the human species, the designer meets the artist Yuri Tanaka. This Japanese cosmic-artist’s mission was to create a platform for collaboration between CERN scientists and the designer, with the intention of investigating and proposing ways of creative coexistence of humanity in the universe. Tanaka developed a «Sea Mediation», central piece of her PhD work at the Tokyo University of the Arts. As a mediator, she worked to animate fruitful meetings and to develop several transdisciplinary projects

The origin of this book is a series of abstract drawings inspired by the stunning discussions between the designer and physicists at Cern. The foundations of quantum physics, simple pillars of an infinitly complex model, were enough to change the designer’perspective. The alteration of the very notions of matter, space, and time gave new directions to his drawing. Starting from a study of irradiating and empty non-forms, he shows a constellation of surfaces stretched between drawing and writing in the silence of eternity. In order to make scientists co-authors of a transdisciplinary object, they were invited to freely comment on the drawings they had inspired.

Facing the drawings, their spontaneous and creative words handwriting, and sketches not less graphic, lead us to rethink what an artist is, and the way in which art can manifest itself in various fields of investigation.

Positioned side-by-side with the drawings, the spontaneous, handwritten words and sketches (not any less graphic than the drawings themselves) lead us to rethink what an artist is, and the way in which art can manifest itself in various fields not traditionally considered « artistic ».
