Ellis Island Machine Eye, 2014, Aurélien Mabilat.
Italian Woman.  See the entire series
Between 1905 and 1925, Augustus Sherman portrayed an great variety of immigrants coming to NY. His work correspond to a new role given to photography at that time: reveal, identify and classify the otherness. Those images, taken in a far from welcoming place, were documents to track sick or offending populations arriving in the Big Apple. Ellis Island Machine Eye is a series of illustrations unifying various immigrants by their humanity. The thermal imagery treatment, erasing the incredible variety of culture, point out how identical we are as human beings. Used in airports to control sickness expansion, it also echoes how the evolution of the machine eye make us dumb, needless to say a single word about our singularity. Transparents to new impartial judgments we developed, we now just have to wait for machine’s verdict: am I a regular human being?
